    Arbeitsbereiche

    Arbeitsbereich Logotherapie und Existenzanalyse

Quellenarbeit zu Frankls Gesamtwerk, Weiterentwicklung der logotherapeutischen Methodik, Verhältnis von Logotherapie, Existenzanalyse nach Längle und existenzieller Psychotherapie. Der Arbeitsbereich verantwortet das Curriculum des Zertifikatskurses Logotherapeutische Beratung.

    Arbeitsbereich Psychotherapieforschung

    The Institute

    Mission and Research Areas

We understand psychology as an empirical science of the human being that takes seriously our capacity for meaning, freedom and responsibility.

    Mission

Viktor E. Frankl described the search for meaning as an independent motivational force in human beings and built a school of psychotherapy on that insight. It is more relevant today than in his own time: empirical research on meaning in life, values and existential distress has grown considerably since the 2000s, and several contemporary therapies have incorporated value-oriented elements.

The Institute pursues three goals. It makes logotherapeutic thought conceptually precise and testable. It places meaning-centered approaches in a fair comparison with other forms of psychotherapy. And it trains professionals to accompany questions of meaning competently while knowing the limits of their role.

We are not bound exclusively to any one school. Logotherapy is our focus, not our dogma. Where research supports other approaches better for a given indication, we say so.

    Team

The Institute brings together an interdisciplinary team of scientists from psychology, psychotherapy research, philosophy and social work. Research, the journal and the courses are the result of joint work.

The scientific team consists of Dr. Dr. Sora Pazer (psychology and social work), Dr. Eleanor M. Whitcombe (psychology and philosophy) and Dr. Samuel R. Ashford (psychotherapy research and methodology).

    Research areas

    Logotherapy and Existential Analysis

Source work on Frankl's complete writings, further development of logotherapeutic methods, and the relationship between logotherapy, Längle's existential analysis and existential psychotherapy. This area is responsible for the curriculum of the certificate course in Logotherapeutic Counseling.

    Psychotherapy Research

Systematic reviews of meaning-centered interventions, measurement of meaning in life and of meaning crises, research on common factors, and comparison with third-wave behavioral therapies.

    Counseling Psychology

Concepts of psychological counseling outside the practice of medicine and psychotherapy: crisis support, counseling in life transitions and prevention of occupational exhaustion. This area is responsible for the certificate course in Psychological Counseling.

    Editorial Office and Knowledge Transfer

Publication of the Journal of Meaning-Centered Psychology and maintenance of the freely accessible encyclopedia.

    Scientific principles

    • Empirical testability. Claims about effectiveness are based on controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Clinical experience is valuable but does not replace such evidence.
    • Transparency about the evidence. We state where research on logotherapy is thin and distinguish between well-studied component techniques and the approach as a whole.
    • Conceptual care. Philosophical and anthropological assumptions are marked as such and are not presented as empirical findings.
    • Independence. Journal contributions undergo editorial review; conflicts of interest are disclosed.

    Professional ethics

Teaching and counseling at the Institute follow the ethical principles of psychology: respect for the dignity and autonomy of clients, confidentiality, professional diligence, avoidance of dependency and multiple relationships, and the duty to refer clients to physicians or licensed psychotherapists whenever a mental disorder requiring treatment may be present.

Questions of meaning are not an illness. Anyone who accompanies them, however, must be able to recognize when depression, a trauma-related disorder or acute suicidality lies behind a crisis of meaning.

    L'Institut

L'Institut poursuit trois objectifs.

    Somatisch

    Körper

    Physiologische Prozesse, Anlage, Krankheit.

    Psychisch

    Seele

    Gefühle, Triebe, Gewohnheiten, erworbene Muster.

    Noetisch

    Geist

    Focus

    Logotherapy

The meaning-centered psychotherapy founded by Viktor E. Frankl, often called the “Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy” after Freud and Adler.

    Viktor E. Frankl (1905–1997)

Frankl was a neurologist and psychiatrist in Vienna. In the 1920s he was in contact with Freud and Adler before turning away from Individual Psychology. In the 1930s he organized counseling centers for young people and headed a ward for suicidal women at the Am Steinhof psychiatric hospital. From 1942 to 1945 he was imprisoned in the concentration camps of Theresienstadt, Auschwitz, Kaufering and Türkheim; his parents, his brother and his first wife Tilly died in the camps.

After liberation he published Ärztliche Seelsorge (1946; English: The Doctor and the Soul) and Ein Psycholog erlebt das Konzentrationslager (1946), later known as …trotzdem Ja zum Leben sagen. The English edition, later titled Man's Search for Meaning, became one of the most widely read books of the twentieth century. From 1946 to 1971 Frankl headed the Vienna Neurological Policlinic.

Image of the human being: dimensional ontology

Frankl describes the human being in three dimensions. They are not separate layers but aspects of a unity that can only be distinguished by the way we look at them.

    Somatic

    Body

    Physiological processes, constitution, illness.

    Psychological

    Psyche

    Feelings, drives, habits, acquired patterns.

    Noetic

    Spirit

Freedom, responsibility, conscience, orientation toward meaning and values.

According to Frankl, the noetic dimension itself cannot become ill, but its expression can be blocked by physical or mental illness. This is the basis of the therapeutic resource Frankl called the “defiant power of the human spirit”: the capacity to take a stand toward one's own states.

    Three basic assumptions

    1. Freedom of will. The human being is conditioned but not fully determined, and is free to take a stand toward conditions that cannot be changed.
    2. Will to meaning. The primary human motive is neither pleasure (Freud) nor power (Adler) but the striving to find and fulfill meaning in one's life.
    3. Meaning of life. Meaning is objective in the sense that it is discovered rather than invented. It is specific to the situation, unique to the person and remains possible under all circumstances.

When the will to meaning is frustrated over a long period, an existential vacuum arises, a feeling of inner emptiness and boredom. If this frustration leads to clinically relevant symptoms, Frankl speaks of a noogenic neurosis.

Paths to meaning: three categories of values

    CategoryRealized throughExamples
Creative valuesWhat we give to the worldWork, deeds, achievements, care for others
Experiential valuesWhat we receive from the worldLove, encounter, nature, art
Attitudinal valuesHow we face an unchangeable fateThe stance taken toward illness, guilt, loss and death

Frankl ranked attitudinal values highest: even when creative action and experience are no longer possible, the freedom to choose one's attitude remains. He summarized the unavoidable limit experiences of suffering, guilt and death as the tragic triad, to which he opposed a “tragic optimism”.

    Methods

    Paradoxical intention

Developed for anticipatory anxiety and obsessive fears. The person is guided to wish for, or intend, precisely what they fear, with humor. The method draws on the capacity for self-distancing and interrupts the vicious circle of fear of fear and avoidance. It shows clear parallels to later exposure-based and acceptance-based procedures.

    Dereflection

Directed against hyperreflection, excessive self-observation, for example in sleep disorders or sexual dysfunction. Attention is guided away from the symptom toward meaningful content and tasks. It is based on the capacity for self-transcendence.

    Modification of attitudes

The joint examination and change of attitudes toward life circumstances, especially toward suffering that cannot be changed.

    Socratic dialogue

A questioning rather than instructing form of conversation in which clients discover their own values and possibilities of meaning. The therapist does not prescribe meaning; Frankl held that meaning cannot be given but only found.

    Fields of application

    • Counseling in crises of meaning, life transitions, retirement and job loss
    • Prevention and support in occupational exhaustion
    • Psycho-oncology, palliative care and grief support
    • As an adjunct in the treatment of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders, addiction and depression
    • Pastoral care, education, nursing and social work

    State of research

Frankl himself understood logotherapy as a supplement to, not a replacement for, psychotherapy. Empirical research developed mainly through measurement instruments: the Purpose in Life Test (Crumbaugh & Maholick, 1964) was the first operationalization of Frankl's concept of the existential vacuum. Today meaning in life is assessed, among others, with the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (Steger et al., 2006) and Schnell's Sources of Meaning and Meaning in Life Questionnaire.

Research on meaning consistently shows that experienced meaning in life is associated with psychological well-being, and that crises of meaning go along with depressive symptoms and hopelessness. For structured meaning-centered interventions, especially Breitbart's Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy for patients with cancer, randomized trials with positive results are available. A meta-analysis of existential therapies (Vos, Craig & Cooper, 2015) found the clearest effects within this group for meaning-centered approaches.

For classical logotherapy as a whole, however, the evidence is limited: many studies are small, methodologically heterogeneous and come from a few research groups. In Germany, logotherapy is neither a procedure reimbursed by statutory health insurance nor recognized as a psychotherapeutic procedure by the Scientific Advisory Board on Psychotherapy. Closing this gap is a core task of our Psychotherapy Research area.

    Distinctions

Existential analysis. Frankl used “existential analysis” for the anthropological theory and “logotherapy” for the treatment. From the 1980s, Alfred Längle developed existential analysis into an independent approach with greater emphasis on emotions and biography; Frankl distanced himself from this development in 1991.

Existential psychotherapy. The American tradition of Rollo May and Irvin D. Yalom shares logotherapy's attention to givens of existence such as death and freedom, but tends to see meaning as created rather than found.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. ACT also works with values and with one's stance toward unchangeable experience, but is based on a behavioral theory of language and cognition rather than an anthropology of the spirit.

In Germany, statutory health insurance covers four so-called guideline procedures (Richtlinienverfahren): behavior therapy, psychodynamic (depth-psychology-based) psychotherapy, analytic psychotherapy and, since 2020, systemic therapy for adults. Within these procedures many methods are used, for example schema therapy or Dialectical Behavior Therapy within behavior therapy. The Scientific Advisory Board on Psychotherapy advises on the scientific recognition of new procedures; the Federal Joint Committee decides on their inclusion in statutory health care.

      Legal framework

The certificates are qualifications awarded by the Institute. They are not state-recognized professional qualifications and do not entitle holders to practice medicine or psychotherapy. In Germany, the treatment of mental disorders is reserved for licensed psychological psychotherapists, medical psychotherapists and persons holding a permit under the Non-Medical Practitioners Act (Heilpraktikergesetz). The professional title “Psychotherapeut” is protected by law, and the title “Psychologe” requires a university degree in psychology. Corresponding rules apply in other countries.

Psychological and logotherapeutic counseling as taught in our programs is intended for people without a mental disorder requiring treatment, for example in life crises, decisions and transitions. Professionals who hold a license to treat can integrate the skills they acquire into their clinical work.

      Cadre juridique
